21: Digital Graffiti

Pixels: meet spraypaint

Spent the last couple days wrapping my head around Joanna Ambrosio's masters project at ECUAD, as an artist participating in a digital graffiti experiment masterminded by Alex Beim of Tangible Interaction.

While the whole concept, process and interactive elements of this were amazingly fun and inspiring, the medium itself was next to impossible to get the hang of. Well i shouldn't say that, i guess it just requires more practice - which i have no problem with whatsoever.

20/ Site Time

The List: Consolidation

Have been working on this for the past day and think it will be easy to do in xhtml. Been needing to put everything on one page for a few years now so i guess now's a better time than any (being in the spirit of getting online). Fall keeps me solving problems. I always forget about that the rest of the year.

Site will include photographs, paintings, drawings, design, and installations.

19/ Studio

Yes: The Constant work in Progress

We often move things around in our studio to accommodate the randomness of projects we take on. This week we're tightening things up a bit as the studio has been home to several dozen paintings in progress. Time to keep the desk clean. Time to keep the paint on the easel. Time to frame a few new walls and take down a couple. And yes, its time to replace railing with aircraft cable.

This is sketchup's take on how things currently stand.

18/ Bikes

Bikes: Cheap if you build em yerself

Collecting a few parts here and there on craigslist for several months could produce enough clutter to actually assemble a few bikes. We've been buiding our bikes this last week and found that buying the key components new (like brakes, fenders, led lights etc...) is the best way to go if you can scavenge for the big stuff online (if you're in gastown superchampion is a crew of rad dudes that will hook up real good quality stuff too). here's the 3 bikes that evolved out of last week - a few more to come after the weekend.

1. Joel's Rammer (100)
2. Jer's Trackie (650)

3. Kris Krug's Nishiki Shakdi (500)
4. Studio Bike Table

17/ Type Style

Interactive: Pixel ST

Doing this type exercise for a few pages on our website. Looking forward to how it goes down as this version of helvetica moves in to a pretty sweet interface. We're filming videos all next week and painting walls ... gray.

16/ Thirty paintings in fall

Reference: A long way down

Both these images are two years old and for some reason have a relationship. In reality just the geographical location they were both shot, south of gastown on railway street. One image is Michael from Bensen, walking down the stairs of the factory. The other is of a perched seagull taking a break from the herring frenzy across the tracks. That was on the roof of 395 alexander, kitty corner and a block away.

Its somehow trippy to me that these two ended up together, i guess i just ran into Micheal the other day outside my studio.

Its good when there's decent music playing outside. you got to hand it too these birds for that, at the very least.

13/ Fall Breaking

Pixels: The street outside

couldn't help making something that celebrated all these yellow pixels covering my studio street, so i went and snapped a photo of them, and here they are in progress with Joel, and complete from my camera phone last night.

12/ Diego round 2

Duude: Diego Round 2

Seems like everything changed a little bit, while the music did i guess so that makes it ok. I'm into this classic feather, that Diego brought by as a candidate for the cover. photographed and drew it out, then traced them similar to the graphite drawing of dude in the inside. that got worked a little to get looking smoother. hand type is all a product of some random ink we found, and still may change based on all the versions we have now to work with. word.

11/ Avatar

Pixels: Avatar, Ta Kao Pa

I spent a lot of the weekend creating the first of a body of work, based on a pixel idea we first prototyped on a wall (noted in below post). This work is a scaled down version with each pixel measuring 1 inch square, while the other work featured 3 inch pixels.

This is also the first full color work i have produced in almost 5 years. While the whole grid is made up of 1,728 pixels, it only required 51 colors of spray paint, some pixels being a combination of several shades. I'll be working on the next 10 over the following month, and probably posting a few as a clear articulation of my motivation for these pictures arrives at some kind of surface.
