10/ Diego

Dude: Record Sleeve

Diego is rad. Trying to make this more classic, but i like the look of it so far - might add a third color. Illustration is coming from a graphite drawing, and the text from india ink. photograph the drawing again and try to get some graphite back. Props to Nye with the brushwork!

09/ Pixels

Installation: Studio Wall

Had this idea a year back about making scaled up pictures out of pixels. the idea originally was supposed to be type, like extremely close up version of your computer screen, depicting words that contradicted the idea of individuality.

I thought maybe I could test a bigger version in the studio with a photo of Rachelle i took at a friends birthday. This is sort of a prototype for a scaled down version, this one being 3 times the size - each pixel spray painted, and measuring 3" square.

Painted on a portable wall, measuring 8' x 12'

08/ Change Site

Design: Change Creative Group

There's obviously a lot more to a site than one screen shot, but since it will be live in a couple months, I figure I'll post a screen a week or something as things begin to be less of a work in progress.

We're really excited about this new design as its massively more scalable than our current skeletal site, though we kind of like the look of bare bones. A lot of time spent right now story boarding video's that will accompany each project and section, more to come...

07/ Porkfest (Traffic)

Photograph: Traffic

I was out in White Rock on Saturday night at an annual party called Porkfest. Just after midnight Nye and I ran across the street and down to the freeway to snap some photos in the fog. Being a bit tipsy i got into traffic a little, somehow ending up with this image that caught my eye first thing this morning. Not sure what will happen with this one, maybe it will never go farther than here. I dig how easy it is to digest, and the contrast between stationary and moving elements.

06/ Dresses

Photographs: Tokyo Street Fashion

(Still editing photos) The first few days i was in Japan this past summer, I'm walking around Yokohama, completely fascinated by the culture of Japanese fashion. It is much different that North America, and seems when observed from a foreign perspective to draw more from the creativity of one individual than the fashion industry itself. There is no question that Japan is influenced by North American media, but it would appear that Japanese fashion is in a class of its own entirely.

The concept of these photos is to celebrate the cultural differences of Japan through the fashion on its streets. I deliberately excluded the faces of the models as the clothing they wore was more the point, in the context of the street scenes behind them.

05/ The Critic

Painting: The Critic

This work is a statement about the relationship between an audience and a work of art. In this case the roles are reversed, and we see this relationship in the context of a portraits perspective of its viewer.

04/ Tokyo

Photograph: Mori Art Museum

Editing some of these photos from Tokyo has got me missing the supercity in ways that Vancouver could never make up for. Organized Chaos - a beautiful culture and some really inspiring architecture. I shot this from the roof of the Mori Art Museum, after having seen one of the best retrospectives: The Turner Prize.

03/ Beach Travellers

Beach Travellers: North American Marketing Posters

This crew is a pretty wild one. Although the trips are unique in that they feature both cultural education and the typical tropical party, the genre still seeks the excitement of social diversity and adventure. We put together these posters to reflect the changes the brand was taking while still pushing the colorful, fun, and cultural destinations.

02/ Sumner Brothers

Sumner Brothers: Record Art

The Sumner Brothers are a band native to Vancouver, and play some of the best modern folk/blues you'll hear. They're genuine, engaging, and loyal to their roots. I had the privilege of creating a record jacket for the self titled record which incorporates images of their family in a cinematic, and musical context. I worked with photographs supplied from the band, coffee stains, ink details, and the texture of a book from the 70's for the textural background.

01/ Catalyst

Catalyst West: Art Direction

The catalyst conference makes its debut on the west coast with a simplified identity, an energetic brand, and potentially some really cool things in the box.

The mark itself is a simplified version of the original mark, while 2 faces from the Univers family were selected to identify content specific to it. As i tried to identify the typical catalyst demographic i realized the tone of messaging needed to be simplified, sophisticated, and authentic. I chose a "retro directional" approach to the art direction, pulling an arrow from the mark itself, and directing the attention to specific areas of imagery that connected to the individual.
