44/ Day in the Life

Day in the Life (detail) ap 2010
Oil on Canvas, 40 x 40"
This picture for me is really about being a witness to the world, in a sort of introspective emotional way. Inspired partly by a Beatles song, it reflects on an individual perspective of events that involve other people, and celebrates the authenticity of one person's resolution of experience and its connection to the rest of time. It's about the things in the world that influence our future, and the things in us that influence the world.

43/ Tide
There is a story in almost everything. I was so taken by this washed up log the other night i had to film it - then a few days later I dropped off some friends at the ferry and we all balanced on it at low tide. It hadn't moved much yet.
I've been making landscapes, some of supernatural snags at sunrise, the earth drifting around in the ocean. I remember old stories of snags breaking canoes told by Corey Bulpitt in an old Vancouver apartment, almost 10 years ago.

42/ Natural Graffiti
Living in a considerably natural environment in contrast to Vancouver - graffiti has been almost eliminated from my creative practice. It has been reduced to scribbles on stretcher frames and scrap paper. I still intuitively look for it - and for places to put it - though it's rare to find any hint of either.
Since there are no walls really that could host it here, I tried to bring the principles of graffiti to my environment by making a consistent moniker made of natural objects and leaving them somewhere on the island. Some stay up for months, even indefinitely - then others are buffed a day later by weather or an animal, or a falling tree in one case! Its become a habit I'm fond of, and I've been posting them online here.
Dedicated to a friend.
